FOSS Nepal Community organized Fedora 9 (Sulphur) Release Party on 9th June, 2008. Fedora is a Linux-based operating system that showcases the latest in free and open source software (FOSS). Fedora is always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. It is built by people across the globe who work together as a community: the Fedora Project. The Fedora Project is open for anyone to join and contribute. Fedora 9, codenamed "sulphur" was released worldwide on 13th May, 2008.
Free DVDs of Fedora 9, which were sponsored by Black Cobra, were distributed in the program.
There are over 2.2 million users of Fedora 8, earlier version of fedora.
This release features GNOME 2.22 which adds security, power management and file system enhancement; and OpenJDK6, an open source implementation of Sun's Java SDK Standard Edition. KDE 4.0.3 is available in the KDE Live image as well as the regular DVD.
The operating system also includes Firefox 3 Beta 5, support for resizing ext2, ext3 and NTFS partitions during install, and support for creating and installing to encrypted file systems.
Ext4, the next version of the mature and stable ext3 file-system is available as a option in this release.
The software also includes PackageKit, a sort of unified installer of open source packages. The back end of PackageKit is built on Yellow dog Updater, Modified, an open source command line package management utility.
